North and South Korea Officially End Korean War

History was made in the Korean Peninsula, as a North Korean leader crossed the border into South Korea for the first time in decades. The historic summit took place on April 17, when North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un crossed the 38th parallel separating the North and the South. Kim was met by South Korean leader Moon Jae-In when he crossed the border, and the two exchanged handshakes to show signs of peace in the Korean Peninsula.

Through the years, there has been a large amount of distrust between North and South Korea as the North continued with its nuclear program. Through the historic summit, North and South Korea put an official end to the Korean War. In addition, this would include North Korea discontinuing its nuclear program. The news of the ending of the war and peace between North and South Korea is important for both countries, as North Korea has continually made threats to the U.S, an ally of South Korea. The peace between the Koreas has been, in part, due to U.S President Donald Trump, according to Moon. When talking about Trump’s role in the denuclearization in the Korean peninsula, Moon stated, “President Trump should win the Nobel Peace Prize.” The peace also could lead to talks between Kim and Trump, as North Korea and the United States continue to work for peace. As each day passes, the possibility that these two meet seems even more likely. Sophomore Johnny Donnarumma liked the fact that North Korea has been denuclearized: “As long as North Korea doesn’t nuke us, I’m fine with it.”

The denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is a big deal for all the world, as one of the biggest conflicts in recent years seems to have officially come to a peaceful end. Conflicts that have lasted for decades are now being put to rest, and a large step has been made in the conversations for peace between North Korea and other countries such as the United States.
