Key Club Hosts 3rd Annual Blood Drive of the 2023-2024 School Year

Key Club (KC) hosted its third and final blood drive of the school year on Wednesday, April 3. Collecting a total of 98 pints of blood and saving almost 300 lives, Lynbrook was able to reach its goal and be awarded $2,000 in Senior Scholarships from the New York Blood Center (NYBC). Prior to the event, KC members advertised the blood drive via social media, flyers, announcements, and emails in order to prepare for the big day. Senior and KC treasurer Marino Grillo explained that “by having a blood drive three times a year, we are able to maximize the amount of blood we can give. This is so important because you save three lives [per blood donation], and you never know who needs blood.” Freshman KC member Skylar Wolkoff agreed and added, “KC hosts this event tri-annually to maintain a steady supply for hospitals because the need for blood is ongoing. Donating blood is such a big deal because it’s like giving the gift of life; every pint can save up to three lives.”

In order for the day to run smoothly, all volunteers were assigned various jobs: helping NYBC workers set up, working at the sign-in table, greeting donors at the entrance, organizing snacks and beverages, and being escorts for the donors. Everyone played a role in the success of this day. Grillo elaborated, “[My] job was the sign-in desk, and the blood drive was an awesome experience to work [at] and oversee.” Wolkoff added, “Volunteers at the blood drive were superstars, working tirelessly to register donors, guide them through the process, and ensure everyone was comfortable and hydrated.”

KC members felt the day was one to remember since they made such a major impact in their community. Grillo commented, “I am so upset this was my last blood drive; it is truly a[n] LHS experience that will linger with me throughout my lifetime.” Kate Santoli agreed and added, “The blood drive is one of my favorite events of the year since it is incredible that we can save so many lives in just a short time. I love seeing community members, parents, siblings, teachers, and more come in to donate. Being a part of this event is very rewarding.” Wolkoff expressed, “The blood drive was really fun, and being able to help all the people was great. The experience was heartwarming—it’s amazing to see the community come together for such a great cause. Furthermore, the day was filled with positive vibes; there’s always that awesome feeling of companionship and the delicious snacks after donating.”
