The National Honor Society’s (NHS) annual Quizbowl brought students together for an evening of friendly competition, challenging questions, and exciting rewards in the high school auditorium on Thursday, Mar. 19. The event was organized by NHS advisor Lenny Bruno, along with President Leah Pisano, Vice President Dilnoor Nijjar, Secretary Addison DiFiore, and Treasurer Jack Murry.
Teams of four from the junior and senior classes competed in a bracket-style tournament and answered several trivia questions from wide-ranging categories: videogames, sports, pop culture, science, social studies, and English. Before the event began, Bruno explained the rules, then passed the event over to the officers who then explained the rules. DiFiore shared, “The questions were made from a mix of last year’s, adding in current events.” Each team used a buzzer to submit its answer, and the first team to eight questions correct would advance to the next round.
The teams had fun picking their own creative and funny team names, and raced to answer the questions. Other participants who were not in that round cheered on and playfully teased the participants. The two teams that made it to the final round were “The Goofy Goobers” and “The Big 4.” In the final round, a team would need to answer 10 questions correctly in order to win, and “The Goofy Goobers” did just that. Each team member received a $45 gift card to SaVino’s Pizzeria. Junior Reid Linzer, who was on the winning team, shared, “I was very excited and relieved when we won. Losing some of the first sets made me nervous. Fortunately, we were awarded the win by a narrow margin. The relief came from my initial confidence; as the matches went on, I was worried we’d lose despite our pretty stacked team.”
In addition to the main event, NHS participants enjoyed a pizza dinner beforehand and opportunities to win gift cards to SaVino’s Pizzeria through raffles. Bruno shared, “Quiz Bowl has become a fun event for our NHS members because it brings together our members in a very congenial manner, and the event is marked with camaraderie and with team and school spirit. It is just nice to see our competing teams have fun and share healthy exchanges with fellow classmates.”
