Valeria Acuna Delgado, a member of the class of 2028, originally suggested creating a chemistry club during the middle of her sophomore year. Delgado and her classmate Sam Constanzo, also a sophomore, chose to unite and develop a new chemistry club.
Delgado just finished chemistry and takes interest in a future career in healthcare and the sciences. She and Constanzo have worked hard to develop and bring this club to life from a simple idea. Delgado reached out to chemistry teacher Kevin Tranchina who agreed to be the advisor of the club. Now, with summer around the corner, Delgado waits for the next school year to see her and Constanzo’s club blossom into something new. Delgado sat down to provide some additional insight into this new club.
Q: What makes this club different from other science-related clubs?
A: This club is different from other science-related clubs because it is the only one that is specifically centered on one type of science. This allows participants to focus on one field and gain deeper knowledge of it. Since it is new, over time, we can figure out how to shape this club and make it unique in a setting with such varietal clubs.
Q: What skills or interests would make someone a good fit for this club?
A: No specific skills are required to join the club. Participants will be taught and provided with all the skills that they will be using. They would need to know how to take part in the labs and utilize the extra information that they wish to learn. Someone who takes interest in science and chemistry would be a good fit for this club. However, this also applies to anyone who is open to participating in trying new things.
Q: What are some long-term goals for this club?
A: Some long-term goals for this club include being part of science fairs and/or competitions and organizing events at other schools within the district. Using our club to gain attention from students in other schools could encourage younger students to take interest in chemistry. Another possible long-term goal is creating a group of qualified participants that would help and tutor other students on chemistry while gaining community service hours.
Q: Will the club participate in any science fairs or competitions?
A: As of right now, we have not looked into any opportunities involving participation in science fairs or competitions due to the newness of this club. However, we do intend to do so in the future. I hope to have many people interested in participating in these activities since it would be a way to show students’ knowledge and determination.
Q: Why should students consider joining?
A: Students should consider joining the chemistry club because it is fun, informational, and beneficial. Students who have enjoyed labs in any science class with their friends will have the opportunity to run labs while interacting socially with friends and other members of the club. This club will also provide many learning opportunities for students who enjoy education and exploring new clubs. Being a member will be beneficial for all students, especially those taking a chemistry and research class because it will coincide with their current studies. This also applies to those who wish to do a chemistry experiment they have never done before or have in the past.
