Time’s Up!

The women of Hollywood had a productive start to 2018 as they continue to fight back against sexual harassment with trending slogan, “Time’s Up.” The actresses, writers, agents, and other women of Hollywood declared “Time’s Up” is a “unified call for change from women in entertainment for women everywhere.”

Time’s Up is now planning to partner up with lead voices for new laws and safety guidance. The program has already collected over 13 million dollars, which will go to the women who do not have the privileges to defend themselves from sexual misconduct. “Time’s Up” was sparked after the allegations against Harvey Weinstein, who had been accused of sexual harassment and assault by many women.

Time’s Up also encouraged the women of Hollywood to wear black on the red carpet at the Golden Globes. The slogan, “Time’s up on silence, time’s up on waiting, time’s up on tolerating discrimination, harassment and abuse,” is a slogan advocated by Hollywood stars such as Shonda Rhimes, Emma Stone and Reese Witherspoon, who claim they are tired of watching from the sidelines and are now taking a stand for what they believe in. Time’s Up is a different variation of the #MeToo campaign, the movement fighting to bring to light pay disparities based on gender and sexual predation in Hollywood.

Along with Weinstein, James Franco came under fire when he was spotted wearing a Time’s Up pin, despite the fact that it was reported that five women accused him of misconduct. Scarlett Johansson asked, “How could a person publicly stand by an organization that helps to provide support for victims of sexual assault while privately preying on people who have no power?” in a speech given at the women’s march. The purpose of “Time’s Up” is not only to call out the problem, but it is to also inspire young women to speak for what they believe in.

Junior Angelica Almonte, who is also the president of Lynbrook’s chapter of the Girl Up club, is ecstatic to hear about the stars’ work in the movement. “I’m really glad the movement has taken off. The amount of out-ed sexual predators in Hollywood is truly astonishing. The topic of sexual misconduct in the workplace and in general is usually overlooked or seen as a ‘taboo.’ The movement has not only taken down sexual predators, but informed people on the topic. Hopefully, this will encourage more people to stand up and make some noise. But the hashtag is only a small step at making actual change, we have a lot of work to do as a society as a whole.”

Freshman Ally Fitzgerald added, “No woman should ever have to feel threatened or uncomfortable in any situation. As a female wrestler, I have been discriminated by many different people along my journey. I have encountered discrimination from other wrestlers in opposing teams from them intentionally hurting me physically.”  Both agree that. “You’re never too young to make a change, and there are so many ways you can get involved and speak up.” Sophomore Jolie Gutstein agreed, stating, “I believe that the actresses should take a stand to help themselves; it is good for them and very inspiring.”

Multiple women, both of Hollywood and the general public, have agreed, the time ends now in regards to tolerating discrimination, harassment, and abuse.
