Each morning, mothers all around the world wake up early to help their children get ready for school and set them up for the day. They wipe their noses, help with homework, and put their children before themselves. They deal with sibling fights, children’s complaints, and the dire morning hair emergencies. For any kind of situation, mothers often to run to their child’s side to help, all without being asked to do so. One special day comes every year when mothers should be shown appreciation and love for all that they do: Mother’s Day. If you need help figuring out last-minute gifts and what to do this Mother’s Day, here is some help!

People celebrate Mother’s Day differently. Students at LHS have their own traditions and things they do to show their love on this special day. Junior Chloe O’Callaghan said, “Usually, we go out for brunch and hang out with family all day. It makes me happy to see how happy [my mom] is celebrating the day that’s all about her.” There are so many ways to celebrate mothers, so what are some suggestions?

Little things could go a long way! Handmade gifts like cards or jewelry are always sentimental and meaningful to whomever receives them. Handmade gifts can include paintings, candles, and even a hand-picked flower bouquet. Freshman Alex Brooks said, “Every year, I make my mom drawings the night before [Mother’s Day] to give to her.” Other arts and crafts that can be made are a “Reasons Why I Love You” jar. For this, take a decorative mason jar, fill it to the top with little slips of paper of all the reasons why you love and care about your mom. This is a gift that keeps on giving; mothers can look back and be reminded of the love that their children have for them any time of the year. Handmade gifts often hold a greater value than those that are store bought. With just some supplies lying around the house, a gift that is meaningful and personalized can be created. Remember, it is the thought that counts!

Now that the gifts are out of the way, what happens throughout the rest of the day? There are little acts of kindness that can be done to keep mom in a happy and joyful mood. Sophomore Christian Casavecchia said, “We all make [my mom] breakfast. Sometimes we bring it to her in bed. Then we go out to dinner with my grandparents and family.” Other than making breakfast in bed and taking chores off her hands, there are also some fun activities that can be done. According to House Beautiful magazine’s website (housebeautiful.com), some fun activities to do with mom on Mother’s Day are:

  • Hosting a game night, with the game being of mom’s choice (of course)
  • Cook a family recipe together
  • Paint pottery
  • Have a movie night with her
  • Go for a picnic
  • Go to the theater
  • Visit a museum
  • Go shopping for her favorite things

This Sunday, mothers just in the U.S. are the main focus. She is the person behind the scenes who makes sure everyone is taken care of. Make sure to flip the roles so that your mother feels loved and appreciated. With fun and meaningful activities that can be done as a whole family, mothers are going to feel seen and given the credit they deserve. Happy Mother’s Day!
