Performance Friday: Lexi Capitali

Lexi Capitali, Grade 11:

I am singing “Happy and Sad” by Kacey Musgraves. The song is about enjoying life, and the feeling when everything is going well and the anxiety just gets to you and you feel that something is going to go wrong or the good time is going to end soon.

Q: How did you get started in music? Who are your greatest musical influences?

A: Well, I have always been in chorus, and I enjoyed singing, but I did not take it to this level until last year when Mr. Wyner asked to hear me sing and then asked if I would perform. Lately, my greatest musical influence has been Stevie Nicks, but I have always been a huge fan of Ben Platt, and I really enjoy his singing style.

Q: Do you aspire to do anything with music in your future?

A: I do not think I will take music further than maybe an a cappella group or a chorus program in college.

Q: What is your favorite part about Performance Friday and/or performing in general?

A: My favorite part about Performance Friday is the thrill of being on stage. I think that the adrenaline is like the most amazing feeling; it’s honestly addictive, and I will never get tired of performing.

Q: Do you get nervous to perform in front of people, specifically your peers? How do you quell your nerves?

A: Sometimes I get nervous. I try not to, but sometimes it’s inevitable. Usually, I get nervous if my song is super difficult or if the period before did not work in my favor. I kind of just roll with it and breathe.

Q: What do you love most about music? Has music helped you in any way through the pandemic?

A: I love music because it is such an escape from the negativity and craziness of our world. It really helped me through the pandemic because I discovered so many new songs and older songs I had forgotten about, so it was totally something that has helped me through this crazy time.
