Students signing in or out of school will now be greeted by a new, friendly face: Attendance Secretary Elizabeth Russo. Russo will maintain attendance for every student in the building, ensuring all students are accounted for in LHS’s open-campus setting.
Before becoming a part of the LHS community, Russo had most recently worked in the attendance office at South Side High School (SSHS) in Rockville Centre. “I loved working in SSHS attendance last year,” Russo recalled, “but I have a daughter who will be attending next year, so when LHS came up, I decided it would be a good time for a change.” Before her responsibility of accounting for all of the students in the building, Russo studied cardiac ultrasound and worked in that field for a short time before she became a stay-at-home mother to her three children. Twenty-five years after being a stay-at-home mother, she realized that the skills she had learned in her time at home could be put to good use in a school environment. “I found that I appreciate high school-age kids the most and enjoy being part of a community that helps young people succeed,” Russo explained.
Outside of school, Russo enjoys spending time with her family, going to the beach, and cooking. Her warm and kind personality fills the office with positivity that may help students to start their days. “I had a great feeling about her,” Principal Matthew Sarosy commented on hiring Russo. “Mrs. Russo is a kind, and caring person. These attributes are what made me believe she would be great as our new attendance person. She has done a wonderful job [so far] getting to know our community. I’m excited for her to be part of the LHS family for years to come,” added Sarosy.
