“My Greatest Fear”

My greatest fear is

living in a cookie-cutter house

where the only difference

is the mailbox number.

Marrying a person

whom I do not love

just because of the

child in my arms.

Going to the grocery store

just to get some peace and quiet

and being called ma’am at

the checkout counter.

Going through a divorce

I cannot afford because

I rely on my husband for

money.

Now I can’t see my

child.

Live in a one-bedroom

apartment

and work in a

diner.

I pray that this is just a nightmare.
