New York Football Blues

The first quarter of the NFL season has been tough for the Jets and the Giants. The Giants have been one of the most disappointing teams in football. They started out the season 0-5, and it looks like they are going nowhere but down. For the Jets, they have gotten off to a respectable 3-2 start, but with a tough schedule ahead and two wins that should have been losses, most fans are probably expecting them to tank.

The New York Giants are currently one of the worst teams in football. Their offensive line is horrible. Eli Manning seems to be pressured on every play. The line has been injured, and next week they might have to play a guard at tackle. What was supposed to be an elite wide-receiving core has been disappointing and injured. After five games, their top four wide receivers are all hurt. The only bright spot is rookie Evan Engram. The run game has been worse than what most fans thought. Paul Perkins disappointed, and due to this, they have been running four below average backs with a below average line. On defense, they have no interceptions and have given up 20 or more points in all but one of their games.

After a loss to the Chargers in week five, Giants fans are praying that a win will come soon because with a tough schedule coming up, an 0-8 start is definitely a possibility at this point. Their next game is in Denver. The Broncos have one of the most elite defenses in the NFL. Their secondary involves pro bowl corners Aqib Talib and Chris Harris, and with a top three-pass rusher in Von Miller attacking Eric Fisher on the edge, the Giants will be overwhelmed in week six. Week seven will prove to be another tough matchup against the Seahawks. The nicknamed “Legion of Doom” defense will destroy the Giants. The Rams pass rushers will not help much either in preventing what will probably be a 0-8 start for the Giants. In the second half, they have two possible wins against the Cardinals and the 49ers, but besides that, most are tough games that are likely losses.

The other team that plays in MetLife stadium has been disappointing for other reasons. The New York Jets went into this season expecting a losing record. They released top players Brandon Marshall, Nick Mangold, and Eric Decker. Now they are 3-2 after they were supposed to be 0-5 and get a top draft pick. Josh McCown has been showing up lately as a fine quarterback. Receivers Robby Anderson and Jermaine Kearse have come out of nowhere as reliable options. Austin Sefarian-Jenkins has been a great tight end, and their defense has not been terrible. The only problem is the players have been playing well against terrible teams like the Dolphins, Jaguars, and Browns.

With games against Cleveland, Miami, and the Chargers being the only easy wins for the rest of the season, a 5-11 season or better will cause what has been happening for the past few years: an average season that never results in a playoff spot leads to a pick in the 10-16 range. This vicious cycle of mediocre draft picks and mediocre seasons means that the Jets need a great pick or a great season to change the franchise.

New York football has been interesting this season. A roller coaster of emotion for both the Giants and the Jets will lead to an interesting end to the season.
