Athlete Spotlights 2021

Camilla Bahri

Senior Camilla Bahri has been a star player for the Lady Owls’ varsity basketball team since her freshman year and has improved every single season. She has been a starter for the past four seasons and has gained a lot of experience that will benefit her team this year. Bahri scored 42 field goals for an average of 10.8 points per game in her junior campaign and was incredible from beyond the arch. Last season, her season-high of 20 points came against Freeport. She totaled four field goals, along with three three-pointers, and three free throws.

“Over the course of the pandemic, I stopped wondering if we would ever have a basketball season,” Bahri said. “I put it out of my mind completely, thinking there was no way we could ever play this year, so I am extremely excited that it is actually happening. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to play in my senior season.”

Bahri intends to lead her team as a captain by leading the younger players and her fellow seniors to success. Bahri’s ability to shoot from long range sets her apart from players all across the county. In the 2019-2020 season, Bahri netted a whopping 34 three pointers. Her best game from beyond the arch led to one of her best performances. Against Holy Trinity, Bahri hit four three-pointers. She also added one field goal and four free throws for a total of 18 points. Bahri has experience, drive, and talent which will hopefully lead her to a successful senior season. The Lady Owls kick off their season with their first practice on February 1.

Leanna: “Camilla is a natural leader on and off the court and I’m going to miss playing with her.”

Mike: “Thomas is a great player and a huge part of our team this year. He’s one of our best scorers and rebounders.

Thomas DeMenezes

Entering his third year as a varsity player, senior Thomas DeMenezes hopes to lead his team to a deep playoff run. The senior forward is aggressive, athletic, and has great scoring ability. He is a monster on the boards and had the talent to score from both the post and outside. DeMenezes averaged 11.1 points per game as a junior and hopes to build on that this year. Almost all of his points came from inside the paint. He totaled an impressive 71 field goals in his 2019-2020 campaign, along with five shots made from beyond the arch.

DeMenezes’ size and strength gives him an advantage over other players around the county. Against Valley Stream North last season, he made eight field goals and four free throws. His contributions on the court do not end with scoring. DeMenezes had multiple double-digit rebounding performances, three of those attributing to double doubles. He had ten rebounds against Garden City, Plainedge, and Floral Park; he also added 13, 10, and 11 points, respectively. DeMenezes hopes to achieve big things this year with a team that is ready to get started. The Owls kicked off their season with their first practice on February 1.

“It’s definitely not the season we wanted,” said DeMenezes, “but our expectations are the same as always: go out and play our hardest each game and go undefeated with the eight games we have.
