Streets that would typically be bustling became quiet and desolate under COVID-19 lockdown.

The world felt as if it was put on pause due to the Covid-19 pandemic in March of 2020. People were locked in their houses for the safety of others and were only supposed to go out for essential needs. Essential workers such as nurses, doctors, store workers, and sanitation workers had to continue to work. Restaurants were limited to delivery and/or pick-up. Many small businesses had to close due to economic suffering. School was moved online and sports were postponed, then canceled. Even though people were isolated from one another, some people managed to became closer at heart with others. Many apps such as Zoom became extremely popular among people to allow them to see family and friends. Caravans became a popular choice for people so birthdays and other special events could still be celebrated. People also appeared to begin to appreciate essential workers more.

The pandemic brought a lot of dreadful things, such as a worldwide lockdown for safety. This led to small businesses closing, families being unable to see each other, mental health issues, the loss of jobs, and economic recession. Olivia Pollicino, a freshman, said, “The first lockdown was a good decision because there were so many cases, and it would have been extremely dangerous without a lockdown.” Alexis Raynor, another freshman, agreed.

During late spring and summer, cases started to gradually go down. This helped ease lockdown restrictions and brought hope. The decrease in cases allowed schools, restaurants, and other businesses to reopen in most areas with safety precautions. Raynor said, “I really think we all needed a break. I do not think it was a safe or smart idea, but after being locked up for a few months, it was relieving.”  Parker  Sloan, a freshman,  added, “I believe that all the huge gatherings should have been stopped, and all these resorts and areas should have been shut down.” Cases then started to rise again towards the fall, which has caused many to think that we need another lockdown, according to ABC World News.

Cases started to go down in the late spring and summer, but when it started to get cooler out in the fall, cases started to go up again. Many think another lockdown would be good, but it seems like it could be another disaster in the making, according to ABC World News. Another lockdown would cause the same things that happened in the first lockdown, which would have terrible consequences. Sloan said, “There should not be another lockdown; our economy cannot afford to take another loss. We need to keep small businesses open and limit the gatherings.” Pollicino said she was not sure if there should be another lockdown. With more knowledge of the virus, more safety protocols, and the release of the vaccine, there is no reason this virus cannot be contained. At this point, another lockdown seems like it would do more harm than good.
