Homecoming 2017

Lynbrook Owls take the field

The air was electric at Marion Street Elementary School on Saturday, Sept. 9 as the boys’ varsity football team won this year’s Homecoming game over the Hewlett Bulldogs by a score of 33-14. Lynbrook spirit was alive throughout the day, as the bleachers were filled from start to finish. The week of Homecoming is a very exciting one at LHS. Each day, students dress up with a different theme to show their school spirit, and the Pep Rally in the gym on Friday afternoon caps off the week.

It feels great to win big at Homecoming in front of all our fans.

On Monday, students donned the red, white, and blue for “America Monday.” Many students could be seen wearing American flag shirts, shorts, and actual flags hanging from their necks. On Tuesday, students did their best to recreate their favorite TV shows for “TV Tuesday.” Some of the more popular TV shows spotted on Tuesday were the duo of Spongebob Squarepants and Patrick Star. On “Wacky Wednesday,” students could be seen wearing all kinds of crazy combinations of outfits, ranging from neon pants to polka dot skirts. As per tradition, students were dressed to the nines for “Formal Thursday,” as many students were seen wearing shirts and ties, polo shirts, and even some suits and gowns. Although not all students choose to dress up during the week, many still enjoy seeing school spirit. “Even though I don’t always dress up for Spirit Week, it’s great to see all the school spirit the students have!” commented Junior Kyle Schneider. And last but certainly not least was Friday. Easily the most exciting and spirited day of the week, the halls were lit up with different green and gold outfit combinations, with accessories such as hats, armbands, headbands, and necklaces. At the end of the day, the entire student body, as well as faculty and administration, headed down to the gym for the Pep Rally, hosted by Health Teacher Jen Kramer, and Social Studies/ Psychology Teacher John Cornicello. The Pep Rally was filled with fun activities and competitions, with the events ranging from multiple t-shirt tosses to a real-life version of Hungry Hungry Hippos. At the end of the festivities, Kramer and Cornicello crowned the Homecoming king and queen, who were nominated by faculty members and voted on by the student body. In the end, king was awarded to Justin Harvin, and the honor of queen was handed to Hope Germanakos.

Before the game on Saturday, a horde of the Lynbrook faithful paraded from the high school to Marion with four banners, one created by each grade. The banners and number of students who showed up to walk them were ranked and the points earned will count for this year’s class night competition.

The Owls got off to a fast start at the game, scoring a touchdown on just their fourth offensive play from a beautiful 40-yard pass by junior quarterback Jack Fagen to senior wide receiver Tommy O’Brien. By the third quarter, the Owls led 26-0, giving Coach Steven LoCicero the chance to play the second and third-string players. In the end, the Owls won by a final score of 33-14. The win was very exciting for both the team and the school. Senior two-way player and captain Steven Hendrickson said, “It feels great to win big at Homecoming in front of all our fans, and we hope to continue this success throughout the [rest of the] season.” When asked about how the team can seek playoff success this year, Coach LoCicero says he believes that “[we need to focus on] team football. We need to continue to focus on each other as a team. Conference III is extremely difficult with 12 teams. It is the toughest in Nassau County! And most importantly, we need to play together and play our best football in November.”
