Winter Sports Preview
It is time for winter sports! Before the season started, seniors from each team gave his/her opinion regarding his/her team and the season.
Boys’ Varsity Basketball: Captain Haris Cekic
Q: What are your hopes for your team this season?
A: My hopes for the team this year is to ultimately be the conference and county champions.
Q: What are you most excited for this season?
A: I am most excited to win games and bring the county championship back to Lynbrook.
Q: How do you think last year’s shortened season will affect this season?
A: I think last year’s season was great, although it was only eight games. We still managed to go undefeated, and that set the bar high for us heading into this year.
Q: As a captain, what messages are you constantly relaying to your team?
A: What our team has been saying for the past couple of years is “together.” If we lose, we lose together. If we win, we win together.
Current Record: 4-1
Girls’ Varsity Basketball: Captain Kyla Nembach
Q: What are your hopes for your team this season?
A: My hopes for this year are to have an enjoyable season with the team and make it far into the playoffs.
Q: What are you most excited for this season?
A: I am most excited about winning games and bonding with my team.
Q: How do you think last year’s shortened season will affect this season?
A: After last season, I think we will take every moment as it comes and be grateful to have a normal upcoming season.
Q: As a captain, what messages are you constantly relaying to your team?
A: I am constantly relaying that you should never give up, and keep trying if you are having an off day.
Current Record: 3-0
Bowling: Captain Conor Rogan
Q: What are your hopes for your team this season?
A: It may be an ambitious goal, but I hope that we can go undefeated this season.
Q: What are you most excited for this season?
A: I am excited to go out every day and try to improve my averages and stay consistent with my scores.
Q: How do you think last year’s shortened season will affect this season?
A: The shortened season did not really affect the bowling team. I must say that it is nice to have a longer season this year though. I always want to go out and bowl more, and I am glad that we have more matches this season.
Q: As a senior, what messages are you constantly relaying to your team?
A: I constantly tell everyone to bowl to their best ability and to just have fun. If we can keep our scores consistent, we are on track for a great season!
Current Record: 5-0
Boys’ Swim: Samir Souidi
Q: What are your hopes for your team this season?
A: I believe this season will have the best results that the team has seen in the past few seasons. With the addition of two juniors, David and Ramiel Fayngersh, who are originally from Hewlett and who are being included to our original roster, they could give us the edge we need to be conference champions. That is if everyone on the team does the best they can, no matter the skill level.
Q: What are you most excited for this season?
A: Definitely the championship meets at the end of the season. The energy the team gives off during big meets is something you cannot get anywhere else. Especially being slated to be placed at a tight first or second at our division meet, this will be the best Division meet I will experience in my four years of being on the team.
Q: How do you think last year’s shortened season will affect this season?
A: Although there were still a few meets last season during the shortened season, you could not get the full experience of the weird season. Already having our first meet, I can tell there’s a different energy from the sophomore class this year compared to the last. And, now, I can fully expect a good season out of the underclassmen.
Q: As a captain, what messages are you constantly relaying to your team?
A: I always feel the need to remind the team what we are working towards and that it will not come easy. Seeing that we have a chance at being both conference and division champions, we cannot get too comfortable during practice. And, what I am telling them seems to be working, too!
Current Record: 3-0
Winter Track: Captain Rachel Belmont
Q: What are your hopes for your team this season?
A: Track is not necessarily a sport where, during races at least, teammates have to work together. I hope that every individual is able to push themselves and accomplish their goals, whether it be running for a longer amount of time or making a distance in a certain time.
Q: What are you most excited for this season?
A: I am most excited to go to meets. Last year, the team was not allowed to, so I am looking forward to attending them again. They are very fun and a great experience. Is also very fulfilling to see your teammates win races against other schools.
Q: How do you think last year’s shortened season will affect this season?
A: Since last year the season was shortened and there were no meets, motivation levels were low among the runners, including me. I believe, though, that everyone has quickly gained back their motivation and that last year’s season is in the past, and it will not hold us back.
Q: As a senior, what messages are you constantly relaying to your team?
A: You can always be better than you were yesterday. Whether you are fast or have more endurance than yesterday doesn’t matter. What matters is that you try harder. That’s what makes you better.
What's up! I am a member of the Class of 2025, and when I'm not writing about sports for Horizon, you can catch me taking photos all around town. I hope...
