Tricks (and Treats) To A Great Halloween Costume

Although it may feel like the school year just started, Halloween has already come and gone. Each year, people of all ages enjoy dressing up in fun costumes for the holiday, and 2021 was no exception.
Even without a particularly jaw-dropping idea, it is easy to spice up a classic costume. In 2020, popular costumes included space cowgirls, Among Us characters, Cobra Kai costumes and, of course, some classics like angels and devils, ghosts, witches, skeletons, clowns, and Disney princesses.
LHS students and staff were eager to comment on fresh Halloween costume ideas. Fashion design teacher Karen Goulet said her favorite way to create a costume is to purchase clothing at a thrift store. “A few years ago, I decided to be a cavewoman,” Goulet said. “It was fun to go thrifting and look for animal print items to make into a costume. Another year, I was the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, which was inspired by a great top hat that I acquired,” she added.
Sometimes, the most creative costumes are made from finding a piece one already has in his closet. If one is looking to save money on his costume, this is a great way to do so.
Senior Lexi Capiti said, “I love a good play-on-words costume like “holy cow” or “deviled egg.” Costumes like this are fun to be seen around Halloween time, making the viewers think and, better yet, laugh. Dressing up as a popular musician is also a fan favorite. Capitali added that she loves “any rendition of a Harry Styles outfit.” This year, Capitali dressed up as Princess Leia from Star Wars.
Freshman and fashion design student Victoria Martinez provided her take on creative costumes: “I don’t like a boring or non-creative costume with little effort. I think Halloween is about dressing up and being yourself.” Martine said she looked forward to seeing funny Halloween costumes, and ones she had never seen before. Martinez used her own creativity to dress up for Halloween in a butterfly costume.
