Artist Spotlight: Lex Burger

Meet Lex Burger, a senior and passionate artist of many years. “I’ve been doing art for as long as I can remember,” Burger said. His preferred style of art is stylized realism, of which there are different forms; for example, in a three-dimensional model, artists use realistic materials, textures, and lighting. Burger, however, tends to stick to two-dimensional stylized realism, making use of different shading and coloring techniques to make his art as realistic as possible.

Burger has created many pieces of art, his favorite being the piece he refers to as the “big ballroom pen drawing.” The piece is impressive, not only because of its elaborate detail, but also because of its large size; the paper itself measures 32 by 40 inches. The drawing was done entirely in black pen ink, depicting a crowded ballroom scene.

Burger explained that repetition and the development of a unique skill-set are the best ways to strengthen artistic ability. “I improve as an artist by practicing, but more importantly by recognizing mistakes,” he added. For an artist, each piece is a chance to improve his skills. Burger specifically wants to develop the skill of “telling a story within pieces.”

For many, having a strong support system is vital to achieve success. Burger said, “My biggest supporters are my parents, as well as Mr. Kunz and Mr. Sena.” Art teachers Tom Sena and Michael Kunz have encouraged Burger along his artistic journey. “The LHS art department is regularly pushing me to create things that are more complex than my initial ideas,” said Burger. His favorite memory as an LHS art student is the school trip to Disney World. As a member of National Art Honor Society, Burger is a dedicated artist who takes advantage of the fruits of the art department.

Burger’s fellow students have taken note of his talent. Junior Adin Weiss said, “Lex is a really good artist. I find it impressive that he can create detailed pieces with few materials. I like his pen drawings.” Junior Michael O’Connor shared, “I’m always impressed to see what Lex is currently working on.”

Although Burger is not actively pursuing a fine arts career, he is attending the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City to study film. He said he will continue to study physical arts as well.
