NBC’s ‘The Office’ Removed From Netflix
NBC’s The Office has been one of the most beloved television shows for many viewers since it first aired in March of 2005. After its final season came to an end in May of 2013, the series moved to Netflix, where viewers were able to watch and enjoy it until Jan. 1, 2021.
The Office is a light humored, quick witted show that was made to look like a documentary series, and it was said to be one of the most popular shows Netflix has ever seen. According to CNBC, in 2018 alone, it had been streamed for 52 billion minutes. When it was announced that the show would be leaving the Netflix streaming platform, many fans were shocked. Netflix tweeted about the removal of the show back in 2019: “We’re sad that NBC has decided to take The Office back for its own streaming platform — but members can binge watch the show to their hearts’ content ad-free on Netflix until January 2021.”
Fans questioned the removal of the show since many did not understand the reasoning for its departure. The Office was always a trending show on the app, so it came as a shock when the announcement was made. Sophomore Ryan Benvenuto commented on the shows departure: “I really enjoyed The Office, and I was really disappointed on the decision to have it taken off of Netflix.”
The Office is now available, however, on NBC’s new streaming service called Peacock. This was the main reason for the show’s departure from Netflix. Netflix was the exclusive streaming service for the series, and NBC wanted to hold that title of exclusivity. For Netflix users who watch The Office, the transfer of the show is not ideal. If they wanted to continue watching the show, fans would have to sign up for an account and pay $5.99 a month in order to watch all seasons ad-free. Senior Finn Boyle agrees the transfer is a hassle, saying: “It is disappointing that The Office will no longer be on Netflix, but I will not be going out of my way to watch again on Peacock.” Some viewers feel that they cannot let go to the show just yet, so investing in Peacock may be an option for them. Junior Amanda Larow said, “I was very upset when I heard The Office was being taken off of Netflix since it is a show I have enjoyed watching multiple times. For now, I am going to watch the two free seasons on Peacock and maybe buy the full version.”
While The Office is no longer on Netflix, it is not the end of being able to stream the highly beloved show. The first two seasons are available for free with ads on Peacock, and the other seven seasons are available with a subscription to NBC’s new streaming service.
