TV Trends at LHS
In recent years, Netflix, a multinational entertainment streaming service, has become increasingly widespread. For a small monthly fee, Netflix allows its users to view thousands of popular movie and TV titles along with Netflix original programming whenever and wherever they want. With no commercial breaks and segueing episodes, Netflix users can “binge watch” entire seasons of a show in a single sitting. Being that the vast majority of LHS students and faculty are already using Netflix, they need to know what to watch next. An informal, but random cafeteria poll has named the following three shows trending at LHS.
Grey’s Anatomy is a medical drama that follows both the personal and professional lives of surgical interns, residents, and attendings at Seattle Grace Hospital. The show focuses on Meredith Grey—hence the title—and the lives of her colleagues turned best friends as well as her on and off relationship with the attending neurosurgeon, Derek. Each episode focuses on new medical cases as well as the ongoing saga of the relationships between the doctors at the hospital. “With rare surgeries every episode, and the ongoing storyline, Grey’s Anatomy never fails to leave you sitting on the edge of your seat,” says Junior John Krendel. Much of the show’s appeal comes from the relationships the viewer is able to build with the characters through the show’s 13 seasons (and counting). “The show is so fun to watch and I love all the characters. I’m so excited to see what else happens in season 13,” says Junior Jess Moreida. After you catch up on Netflix, you can watch season 13 on abc at 8:00pm on Thursdays.
The Office, a multi-award-winning “documentary style” comedy series, gives a look into the daily lives of employees at the mismanaged, fictitious paper company, Dunder Miflin, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The Office’s nine seasons follow the love story of receptionist Pam Beesly and sales representative Jim Halpert as well as the hilarious antics of the other office employees. Jim enjoys pranking his eccentric desk clump mate, Dwight. Meanwhile, Dwight is constantly concerned with attaining the coveted position of regional manager, a position held by none other than Michael Scott, the office’s idiot boss. Part of what makes the show so good and its jokes so funny is the documentary style filming. Rather than use laugh tracks or studio audiences, the show is filled with awkward silences that make it relatable and realistic. The show often utilizes interviews between the documentary crew and characters both for their comedic value and their ability to reveal the true feelings and intentions of the characters. “I love The Office because you get to see the journey of how the characters grow over the years. It never fails to make me laugh, but it’s not just a comedy. It gives an authentic look into the problems that real people face,” raves LHS sophomore Marissa Keller. The show ran from 2005 to 2013 and can be watched in its entirety on Netflix.
Stranger Things, a Netflix original series, is the most recent hit. This sci-fi thriller takes place in the 1980s in a small town in Indiana. At first glance, there is not much to be said about the town; however, when a young boy, Will, goes missing, his friends, loved ones, and the town sheriff begin to uncover the dark secrets lurking in the background. An unholy government research facility and a malicious supernatural force wreak havoc on the group, now determined to uncover the truth. Yet with all that goes on, the rest of the town is still oblivious. In their quest to find and save him, Will’s friends cross paths with an escaped government experiment: a telekinetic eleven-year-old girl who plays an important role in the town’s history and future. “One of the most impressive things about the show is the combination of the setting and Sci-Fi genre. The show takes place in the early 80s, and everything from the clothing and scenery to the dialogue is accurate. Even despite the focus on a science research facility and supernatural monsters, it still feels realistic which is part of what makes it so terrifying and intriguing,” raves Junior Jack Hunter. Junior Erin Minnick agrees, “If you’re into those shows that give you that eerie feeling then Stranger Things is the show for you. The show will really grab your attention and get you hooked.”
