Your 2020 Celebrity Presidential Candidates

Following the 2016 Presidential election, many musicians, actors, and other celebrities have stepped forward and made claims that they may run for president in the 2020 election. While many Americans may laugh off some of these claims as foolish and impossible, there is a very real possibility that one of the celebrities who has made his or her thoughts about running in 2020 public will indeed run, get votes, and win.

It is not out of the ordinary for celebrity figures to hold government positions, and it has happened quite often in the past. Actor and former professional bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger served two terms as the governor of California from 2003 to 2011. Media personality and retired professional wrestler Jesse Ventura once held office as the governor of Minnesota from 1999 to 2003. Most recently, television personality and established businessman Donald Trump was elected as the 45th President of the United States in 2016. For those who are now claiming that they may run in 2020, Trump’s win proves that celebrities can win the presidency with the right approach.

When asked his opinions on celebrities running for office, sophomore John Donnarumma said, “It concerns me, because some celebrities who run might not have a clue about what politics are like, but they believe that they have ideas that are good for the betterment of the country. If there are celebrities who run and know about more politics, then maybe it would work out well.”

One of the people who was influenced by Trump’s win in 2016 was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who, shortly after Trump’s election, stated in an interview with Vanity Fair that “this past election shows anything can happen. It would be a great opportunity to help people, so it’s possible [I may choose to run for office].” Following Johnson’s comments about running in 2020, actor and comedian Kevin Hart told E! News that he would like to run against Johnson, stating, “The world wanted to see that, and he didn’t go with me, so I’m not rooting for DJ. If Dwayne Johnson runs for president, I will be running for president the same year. And I can announce my VP right now, and it’s somebody I love: it’s my son!” Hart’s comments are most likely a joke and should not be taken seriously, but anything can happen in the crazy world of politics.

While Hart’s claims of running for president are probably not serious, rapper Kanye West has made his intentions to run for president in 2020 very clear. It began at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards when he delivered in an eleven-minute acceptance speech after winning the Video Vanguard Award. In his infamous speech, he stated that he has full intentions of running for president in 2020. Since that night, West has stood by his decision to run, but perhaps in 2024 instead. After meeting with Trump on the morning of December 13, 2016, Kanye apparently decided to postpone his 2020 run, posting a cryptic tweet stating “#2024” later that day.

Lastly, while she has not confirmed or shown much interest in running for the presidency in 2020, television personality star, actress, and activist Oprah Winfrey has been in the spotlight recently for a presidential campaign. After delivering an empowering speech at the Golden Globe Awards in January 2018, fans on social media began rallying for the famous talk show host to run for president. Since then, Winfrey has told numerous publications that she is not particularly interested in running in 2020, for she would be not be qualified to do so. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel in February, she shut down the rumors of her running for president, saying “Where do I look into the camera? I am definitely not running for president. You know, you give a speech and then you sit down, and you have surprisingly started to run for president.” This statement practically takes her name off the ballot, but there are still about two years until the election, so anything can happen.

In addition to these big names in the mix for the 2020 election, celebrities like Chris Rock, Katy Perry, and Will Smith, among others, have expressed varying levels of interest in taking position in the White House. Whether or not any of these potential candidates will decide to fully commit themselves to running is questionable, crazier things have happened in American politics, so it is going to be difficult to predict what will happen when Donald Trump’s first term as president comes to an end.
