Lynbrook’s chapter of the New York State Business and Marketing Honor Society (BHS) held its second induction ceremony on Wednesday, Apr 2. Fifty-two students were in attendance for the evening ceremony, which commenced at 7:30 p.m. in the LHS auditorium. BHS senior officers–President Jessica Strohofer, Vice President Sydney Coble, Secretary Zia Baluyot, Treasurer Gabe Lewner, and Public Relations Chair Cooper Schorr–organized and conducted the ceremony. BHS advisor Dr. Benedict Tieniber, as well as Principal Matthew Sarosy and Assistant Principals Sal Brescia and Bryan Garcia, were in attendance and helped facilitate the induction of new and returning members.
BHS members had a 7:15 p.m. call time and got settled in alphabetical order, which ensured the process of calling students up for their certificates would run smoothly. Once parents were seated, the procession began with a series of speeches given by the officers. They spoke about their experiences in the business education courses and how taking these classes has impacted their college and career choices. Strohofer expressed, “[BHS] has really helped me find what I wanted to do in college. I plan to major in business administration and marketing, so being able to take these business courses and get inducted into the honor society helped show to my college that it is something I want to commit to for the rest of my life.”
2025-2026 Treasurer-elect and junior Lilyanna Blackstone also gave a speech. “I was so motivated and pleased to write a speech because I have so much to say about Dr. Tieniber and how he helped me to become the best version of myself. I’m still changing my life every day to improve and be a better student and member of the society, and I wouldn’t have been able to get here without Doc,” Blackstone shared. She has taken both the Virtual Enterprise (VE) and accounting courses at LHS and explained that they have motivated her to pursue a career in business and marketing. Blackstone added, “Being in these classes has given me the chance to make so many connections and learn how to succeed in the real world.”
Following the speeches, the officers lit candles representing BHS’s three pillars: academic excellence, outstanding service, and character. All inductees showcased these qualities in their application to the honor society. After the candle lighting, newly and currently inducted members were called to the stage by either Sarosy, Brescia, or Garcia to receive their certificates.
The evening concluded with congratulatory remarks from Sarosy and the announcement of the ‘25-’26 BHS board of officers: President-elect Maxwell Dellacona, Vice President-elect Liam Gallagher, Secretary-elect Nicole Grillo, Treasurer-elect Blackstone, and Public Relations Chair-elect Cooper Cordes. Cordes was very honored to be selected for the board: “I acquired this position by nomination from Dr. T. I was very surprised to find out, as Doc stopped me in the hallway to tell me. I am very excited to serve as public relations chair, as I will make sure to encourage as many people [as possible] to take business classes.” Cordes further explained the importance of being educated in business: “The reality is that at some point in your life, you will need to know about business. So, even if you take these classes and don’t end up majoring in business, it still teaches important life skills like time management, teamwork, and problem-solving.”
Currently, LHS offers 10 business classes: Advertising and Marketing, Accounting 1, Accounting 2, Business Law 1, Business Law 2, Virtual Enterprise 1, Virtual Enterprise 2, Financial Markets, 21st Century Economy, and Senior Seminar. A particular incentive that draws students toward these courses is the accompanying college credits that students can pay for now to save money when in college. The BHS was only introduced last year, and the business education curriculum continues to expand here. Tieniber remarked, “In our second year of inductions, I couldn’t be prouder of all the inductees and our 2024-2025 board members who ran the event. [I’m] looking forward to a great year.”
