As the holidays come around, people tend to want to leave the house and go on an adventure. Luckily, New York’s five boroughs are only a train ride away from Lynbrook (with some subway rides). The city has a myriad of things to do ranging from festive food options, activities, or exploring.
Oscar Wilde is a famous restaurant known for its Christmas dinners. Its Victorian theme creates a historic and interesting vibe. It has a multifarious menu consisting of calamari, Mediterranean food, Greek food, and Italian food. Additionally, the Union Square Holiday Market has many delicious food options. Senior Madison Watson said, “I love going to Union Square Holiday Market because it is very nice, and the restaurants have [tasty] food.” The holiday market also has many affordable shops offering jewelry, toys, decorations, and other items that can make perfect Christmas gifts. Another great place to visit is Rolf’s, a German restaurant known for its elaborate holiday decorations and great service. Its authentic menu consists of Germany’s national food, schnitzel, which is fried veal or chicken. Lastly, Papillon Bistro features gorgeous holiday decorations. This restaurant’s menu contains American food, such as mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, and chicken tenders.
Angelina Paris Café is another popular destination in Manhattan, especially during Christmas. “I have been going there for years with my dad, and we always get the famous hot chocolate,” sophomore Anabel Ramsey said. Hot chocolate is always a great way to warm up and enjoy something sweet and tasty after a long day of walking in the chilly winter weather. “I definitely suggest going there if you like a high-tea dining experience, as well as the fact that it is not too expensive for Manhattan,” Ramsey added.
There are so many different activities to do in the city, ranging from more active options to relaxing ones. “Bryant Park is a cute winter village with lots of festive foods, stores to walk around in, small businesses, and ice skating,” said sophomore Giovanna Cerino. Another sight worth seeing is the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, which has an ice-skating rink right near the base of the tree. The Dyker Heights Christmas Lights in Brooklyn are also a well-known holiday attraction. In this area, houses are distinctively decorated with enormous decorations. If looking for a formal event to attend, consider dressing up and going to a ballet at Lincoln Center or the classic “Rockettes Christmas Spectacular” at Radio City Music Hall.
New York City is filled with things to do all year, but when the holiday season comes around, and the aroma of winter fills the city, and the possibilities of where to go are endless. So, whether it be a formal event, shopping, or a festive restaurant, the city will fill your heart with joy and warmth of the holiday season.
