Unique and cozy, Ground Central is the perfect place for people looking to get away from the grey of Lynbrook and a chance to indulge in good music, food, and most importantly coffee. The menu consists of an array of warm baked goods, coffee, tea, and other hot or cold beverages. Ground Central is perfect for those with dietary restrictions as there are many vegan and gluten-free food options.
At Ground Central, many can be found working, catching up with friends, reading, and simply enjoying the comforting atmosphere. One of the most unique parts of this atmosphere is that it is fitting for both introverts and extroverts. While some people may prefer a quiet corner to read, others may be found chatting with friends, discussing the latest music, news, or anything else on their mind.
Located on an unassuming strip in Philip’s Plaza, many people in Lynbrook seem to not be aware of its existence. Despite that, Ground Central is always busy with customers and regulars. When first walking in, one is hit with the aroma of coffee and nostalgic music, ranging from soft jazz to classic rock. Along the walls are shelves adorned with books free to read, and to the side are bins of vinyl records. A quotation from Lou Reed rests above the bins in white chalk marker, one of many chalk marker creations throughout the establishment. The white chalk art contrasts the black walls and adds a modern flair to combat the vintage aesthetic of the café. Even the coffee cups sport the iconic white art, which varies based on the location: “GC” in large letters, the industrial illustration fits the comfortable establishment. Armchairs and tables spread throughout, it is clear anybody is welcome in Ground Central.
Ground Central has many special cuisine options, such as pastries or the savory pesto-mayo BLT. The sandwich itself tastes almost homemade, the pesto adding a citrusy twist to a classic BLT sandwich. The toasted white bread makes for a lovely sweet and salty combination, and none of the flavors is overbearing. The mayonnaise balances out the pesto and juicy tomatoes, which keeps the sandwich from being soggy. Served with a side of spinach dressed in vinegar, the sandwich pairs great with many of their teas or lattes.
Teas are another differentiating factor of the coffee shop, as many coffee shops have mediocre if not non-existent options for a fresh tea. Serving a variety of hot or iced teas, Ground Central’s most popular tea, hibiscus tea, tastes rich even without the addition of sweetener. This refreshing beverage is the perfect drink to enjoy as the days get hotter. Even when warm, the tea itself has a comforting, semi-sweet hibiscus flavor, justifiably why it is one of their most popular caffeine free options.
For those who enjoy a caffeinated kick, Ground Central has an abundance of coffees, ranging from a simple iced coffee to flavored espresso-based beverages. Their macchiato is an excellent choice, hot or cold. Traditional versions of the beverage are available, but the latte-inspired adaptation makes for a creamy coffee. The strength of the milkiness mixes well with the hint of espresso you get when finishing your beverage, and it is an excellent drink hot or cold.
While Ground Central has many excellent drinks, its pastries are close to perfection. The addictive salted chocolate chip cookie is a staple, and one of the shop’s best baked goods. The gooey cookie is best warm, featuring a crispy crust with a buttery middle. The chocolate stuffed cookie is a substantial size and a nice treat to finish off one’s day, featuring sugary insides and a salty kick that somehow marries well with the essences of brown sugar and vanilla. The cookie, one of Ground Central’s many pastries, is a must have when stopping by.
Being a regular at Ground Central has its perks, whether it be the reward system that comes with paying by card, or the friendly employees who, even on busy days, get the beverages done in record time. Manager Desiree Royer can often be seen behind the counter. Always welcoming customers with a friendly smile, Royer expresses a clear appreciation for her customer relationships. “I love the different people I get to meet and the diversity of the clients,” said Royer. She described the environment as inclusive and “for all walks of life.” Freshman Delia Kirkpatrick, a common visitor of Ground Central, said, “I love the ambiance of the environment. And I like the people there; the people there are very nice.” Junior Jane Kelly said, “It seems very homey and like a cool, safe place.” It is clear that all are welcome at Ground Central.
