Ever been bored over a Christmas break? If so, there are many ways to have fun and be festive during the holiday season. During the year, it can be difficult to find activities to do with friends and family, but during the holiday break, there are several ways to spend time together.
One way to get out of the house is to go skiing. Freshman Emily Callaghan said, “I go up to the Poconos and ski with my family.” Skiing is a fantastic idea because one can learn new skills. There are ski locations closer to home than some may realize such as the American Dream Mall and the Mountain Creek Resort, which are both located in New Jersey. Freshman Zoey Garver said, “One thing I like to do over winter break is go skiing.” In addition to skiing, Garver also enjoys “seeing the lights that you can drive through.” She said that “The lights are cool, and it is fun to go to.” Jones Beach State Park and Brookwood Hall Park host such drive-through lights throughout December and into early January.
There are also many activities to do with friends throughout the break. Freshman Camila Montano said, “I enjoy going to the movies and having a gingerbread competition with my friends.” In December, Regal Theaters in Lynbrook rought back a plethora of holiday movies for an affordable price including Elf, The Polar Express, Christmas Vacation, and The Grinch. In addition, Montano enjoys “hosting a secret Santa with my friends.” Hosting a Secret Santa is a great way to bring friends together and enjoy the Christmas season.
When asked about what her favorite thing to do over the holiday break is, math teacher Tina Dougherty said, “Making Christmas cookies.” Baking and decorating holiday cookies is always an exciting way to bring family and friends together. Another thing that Dougherty enjoys doing during the break is “playing family board games.” There are many different types of board games to play with family and friends. There are even board games made especially for the Christmas season such as Elf Monopoly and Clue the Grinch.
Over the break, English teacher Nicole Guillet enjoys “getting together with family and friends and making holiday gifts with [her] Cricut.” There are many different types of homemade gifts that one could make for friends and family. It is a great way to show various artistic skills to family or friends. Whether a crafty person or not, a homemade gift or card is often greatly appreciated. Another way Guillet enjoys spending her Christmas break is by going to Manhattan to see the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center. Manhattan is especially exquisite to see during the Christmas season. Guillet also suggested “holding a gingerbread house decorating competition.” Crafting gingerbread houses can be an enjoyable way to spend time together with friends or family and to have a healthy competition on whose gingerbread house looks the best.
The break is a great chance to bring family and friends together. With the Christmas season comes new and exciting ways to spend time with the people one loves.
