As winter break approaches, some may be curious about which films to watch during their time off from school. Movie preferences depend on one’s personality, age, and interests, leaving many with the challenge of what to watch. Some movie genres include comedy, romance, horror, thriller, and drama. However, particularly during the winter holiday season, many teenagers tend to start watching the classic holiday movies we all know and love. The most popular holiday films consist of comedies, romantic fantasies, and musicals.
For freshman Zoey Garver, the simplicity and entertainment value of comedic films is the appeal: “I like to watch [comedic movies] because they are easy to follow along with and pay attention to.” As the holiday break arrives, students typically want to lay any references to academics aside, so comedy is a relaxing movie genre to watch with friends or family. “I love watching comedy, especially with my family because it’s entertaining to watch while eating dinner,” Garver added. Watching comedies can attenuate stress and give teenagers time to laugh and relax.
Another common genre that teenagers enjoy watching is romance. Sophomore Gianna Marafioti explained, “My favorite holiday movie is Falling for Christmas. Romance is the most entertaining because most romance movies were made recently. [They] contain popular music and present-day problems.”
Classic holiday films also continue to enchant audiences. There are countless timeless holiday movies: Elf, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and A Christmas Story, to name a few. Most teenagers tend to go on their phones throughout the day; during winter break, teenagers will spend an average of eight hours a day on their phone. Watching a lively and enjoyable movie with friends or family is a great alternative to this. During the winter season, particularly over the holidays, statistics show that at least 60% of people start watching holiday movies after Thanksgiving.
Physical education teacher Brian Hetrick shared, “My family’s all-time favorite holiday movie is A Christmas Story.” A Christmas Story is a funny family movie. “Home Alone is my favorite movie because it is the perfect mix of comedy and holiday spirit,” remarked freshman Emily Callaghan. Home Alone is a recurring favorite of many. In this movie, a boy has an argument with his parents and storms up to the attic where he falls asleep. The next morning, his family forgets when leaving him behind for their big holiday vacation. “It’s a tradition to watch Home Alone over winter break with my family,” Callaghan explained.
For those embarking on the quest for the ideal movie to enjoy during holiday break, researching classic films that align with personal interests is a great start. In addition to the popular genre of comedy, there are hundreds of alternatives, whether it be action, crime, drama, horror, or romance. Snuggling up in a cozy blanket with hot chocolate and a great movie is both relaxing and delightful.
